What prompted the invention of the G-7 Smartwinder was that many Imperial newbies in their first ship with missiles, often the Interceptor or Spectre, wanted a more worthy, powerful and affordable missile to the annoyingly low in intelligence P80 Sidewinder. Eventually, the Imperial engineers listened. In a matter of days, they had varied the P80 Sidewinder design to produce a missile of much the same size, but with slightly more damage and much more intelligence at only 500 credits more. In a similar way to the Imperial Elite MK.II destroying the rein of the Imperial Elite MK.I, it practically demolished the chances of an Imperial using a P80 Sidewinder when these were available. As a testament to the reason of the upgrade and the missile it was based on, it was called the "Smartwinder".
